Food Waste and Manure to Renewable Energy

WHAT WE DO

The food waste challenge is epic. Where some see a problem, the organics to renewable energy team at Vanguard Renewables sees an opportunity. We transform what was considered waste into renewable energy and create value for people and the planet. Vanguard’s Farm Powered anaerobic digesters and Organics Recycling Facilities can process packaged, liquid, or solid food and beverage waste into renewable energy.

Vanguard Renewables Farm Powered Anaerobic Digestion facilities are the largest organics recycling destination in the Northeast, and we’re growing nationwide.

40% OF AMERICA’S WASTE IS COMPRISED OF ORGANIC MATERIALS

FARM POWERED SUSTAINABILITY

In the United States, more than 40 percent of all food that is produced ends up being discarded. Much of this inedible food was previously sent to landfills or incinerators, but can be recycled into renewable energy. The food waste recycling revolution that started in Europe is now sweeping across the United States. Vanguard Renewables uses anaerobic digesters situated on farms to capture this energy and generate renewable natural gas or renewable electricity to be used in homes and factories across the nation. Moreover, the process produces low carbon fertilizer that host farms use to support regenerative agriculture practice and provides a diversified income stream that supports the American Farmer.

We work with large food and beverage manufacturing waste streams and smaller waste producers from across the food and beverage spectrum to recycle food and beverage waste that cannot be consumed by people or animals and that would have previously ended up in a landfill generating dangerous greenhouse gases. Instead the waste is transported to a local dairy farm where it is combined with farm manure in a sealed tank and generates renewable energy.

Farm Powered Organics Recycling Facility

Our Organics Recycling Facility in Massachusetts is the most advanced in the Northeast and the first of several we plan to open in key markets. We depackage and process expired goods, off-spec batches, and food and beverage products that are unsafe to eat. The extracted food is transported to a Farm Powered anaerobic digester, where it is combined with farm waste and converted into renewable energy.

This Farm Powered renewable energy is purchased by companies like Polar Beverages, Wachusett Brewing Company, and Cabot Creamery, which provide waste to fuel the digester and close the sustainability loop using Farm Powered renewable energy to power their facilities.
