Founding FPSA Member Profile: Dairy Farmers of America

“Anaerobic digestion can positively impact the economics and carbon footprint of a farm, allowing generational sustainability and energy independence. As our partnership with Vanguard continues to grow, we look forward to more of our farms taking advantage of the new carbon economy to make a positive impact.” – Hansel New, Director of Sustainability Programs at DFA

About Dairy Farmers of America

Dairy Farmers of America is a national dairy cooperative owned by more than 12,500 family farmers. DFA is the first U.S. dairy cooperative to set science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 30% by 2030, from a base year of 2018. The targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and support the Paris Agreements broad goal of keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

DFA Commitment to Farm Powered Strategic Alliance

DFA has a multi-year strategic alliance with Vanguard Renewables that offers DFA farm families nationwide the opportunity to host a Vanguard Renewables Farm Powered anaerobic digester. DFA owns regional brands like Kemps, Friendly’s and Mayfield Dairy to name a few as well as 86 milk processing and manufacturing facilities across the country; all with waste streams needing disposal and facilities that are often powered with conventional natural gas.

Joining the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance (FPSA) provides DFA with a waste diversion strategy and negative carbon renewable energy pathway that aligns with their science-based goals and provides process efficiencies to DFA plants. DFA intends to recycle manufacturing waste at Farm Powered anaerobic digesters nationwide.
